Several local music stores have instrument rental programs, most with a variety of different sized instruments (plus case and bow), rent-to-own options, and no long term contracts to sign. Contact them for details of their rental plans:
Buy
Craigslist is a good place to find cellos and double basses for sale. Student instruments are often listed there by cellists and bassists who’re trading up as they advance – or grow! If you take good care of your instrument you can probably resell it when you decide to trade up.
Borrow
Ask around – perhaps a friend, neighbor or co-worker has an instrument gathering dust somewhere that they’d be willing to lend?
